Bill's Story
Bill spent his elementary years in the Allapattah section of Miami near the old Embry-Riddle Aviation School not from from the Miami airport. Family moved to Hialeah (West 49th St) in 1955 while Bill was in the 7th grade at Robert E. Lee Jr High. After graduation from Hialeah High in 1959, Bill went to Mars Hill College (Asheville, NC) for one year. While there, he applied for an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He was nominated by Rep Dante Fascell, and was accepted to the Academy. Despite numerous disciplinary problems (due to jugging and wenching), graduated in 1964. Tunisia, Morocco, Japan, Indonesia, Phillipines, and Texas. Following graduation from the Academy in 1964, Bill sailed as an engineering officer on ships carrying military cargo to Vietnam, spending a lot of time in Saigon, Danang, Qui Non, and Cam Rahn Bay. In 1966 Bill quit the sea, got married to a girl he had known at Kings Point, and got an office job in Washington DC working for the U.S. Navy designing ship steam propulsion plants. His Navy nuclear steam plant experience got him a job at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1980 shortly after the Three Mile Island nuclear plant event. Bill retired from the NRC in 2001 and is enjoying retirement in Maryland. He visits his 99-yr old mother in Coral Springs, FL occasionally and enjoys visiting HHS classmates while in FL.
